Meta shuts down Armature Studio, Sanzaru Games, and Twisted Pixel
Three virtual reality game studios closed.
Meta will close game studios Armature Studio, Sanzaru Games, and Twisted Pixel, the company confirmed to Gematsu.
The news comes following a Bloomberg report today that the company plans to cut more than 1,000 jobs from its Reality Labs business, which is the division that manages its virtual reality headsets and software.
Twisted Pixel and Armature Studio were acquired by Meta in October 2022, and Sanzaru Games was acquired back in February 2020.
Armature Studio developed the virtual reality port of Resident Evil 4, which was published by Meta’s Oculus Studios, but launched before the company’s acquisition. It did not release any games after the acquisition. It is also known for Batman: Arkham Origins Blackgate and Where the Heart Leads.
Sanzaru Games developed Asgard’s Wrath and sequel Asgard’s Wrath 2 under Oculus Studios, but is also known for its era of Sony Interactive Entertainment-published games like Secret Agent Clank, The Sly Collection, and Sly Cooper: Thieves in Time. It also developed Sonic Boom: Shattered Crystal and Sonic Boom: Fire & Ice for SEGA.
Twisted Pixel developed Marvel’s Deadpool VR as part of Oculus Studios, but is better known for its Xbox 360 era releases like ‘Splosion Man and Ms. Splosion Man.
In a statement to Gematsu, a Meta spokesperson said, “We said last month that we were shifting some of our investment from Metaverse toward Wearables. This is part of that effort, and we plan to reinvest the savings to support the growth of wearables this year.”
