“It’s been a surreal journey developing this game and I’m so excited to put it out into the world for all sorts of people to explore and enjoy,” said Glass Head Dolls head Tammy Morley in a press release.
Here is an overview of the game, via Glass Head Dolls:
PRISON OF HUSKS is a nostalgic souls-like set in a painted afterlife. In PRISON OF HUSKS, you awaken in Lysiane—a heavenly afterlife painted by the hand of a pure heart. Your soul has found its new vessel here, but all that is left around you is a haunting desolate landscape now crumbling beneath your feet. What put its painter to rest? Where is your love? She depends on you. Seek your beloved.
Challenge an assortment of vicious foes, from cunning dolls to decaying pigment beasts. Their unfulfilled desires linger, but you must find resolve Ignite the flame within by engaging in combat. Fuel your adrenaline to bolster your damage. Parry attacks with precision timing to find your openings. The world offers an arsenal of equipment to discover and experiment with. Whether it be pistols or magic, attune your doll from blade to brooch. Each boss encountered offers new challenges. You must mix and match your loadout to overcome those who will stand in your way.
Inspired by the complex level design of earlier souls games, PRISON OF HUSKS aims to recapture the magic of wandering a compact and dense world full of shortcuts that weave back on themselves. Uncover secrets in every nook and archive them in your little sketchbook. Every step taken is a step closer to your love.
PRISON OF HUSKS was initially the result of months of solo game development by British-Indonesian developer Tammy Morley in order to practice level design, animation, programming, and game design. The prototype immediately found an audience on itch.io for its satisfying play experience and esoteric world, and the project was fully funded by WINGS shortly thereafter. In the newly updated demo, players can enjoy the first level and boss fight of the full game experience. Improvements have been made to combat, visuals, items, enemies, and tutorials from the previous demo, and the small team would love feedback ahead of release.
The demo is available in Simplified Chinese for the first time, as well as in English. The full game will include support for 11 languages including Simplified and Traditional Chinese, Korean, Japanese, French, Italian, German, Spanish, Brazilian Portuguese and Russian.
