Arcade comedy sports game Pro Jank Footy launches August 12 for PS5, Xbox Series, Switch 2, Switch, and PC
'A sport that most of the world has never heard of.'
Over-the-top arcade comedy sports game Pro Jank Footy will launch for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series, Switch 2, Switch, and PC via Steam on August 12, developers Powerbomb Games and Tinker Town announced. It will support English, German, Italian, Spanish, French, Japanese, Traditional Chinese, and Simplified Chinese language options.
“When we exhibited Pro Jank Footy in Japan, a lot of players didn’t even realize our game was based on a real sport, let alone a billion-dollar industry,” said Powerbomb Games creative director David Ashby in a press release. “We hope that this sentiment continues as more people play our game. It’s a really tasty thought to think that Pro Jank Footy has the potential to distort the world’s view of Australian Rules Football. It would be a real good thing, considering we take footy incredibly seriously down under.”
Here is an overview of the game, via Powerbomb Games:
Pro Jank Footy brings the madcap action of retro sports classics, such as NBA Jam and NHL ’94, to Aussie Rules Football—Australia’s favorite code of sport (a sport that admittedly most of the world has never heard of).
Australian Rules Football, colloquially known as “Footy,” is a fast-paced, contact sport played between two 18-player teams on a traditional cricket oval, where players kick a grid-iron shaped football and score goals between two giant posts at the end of the field.
From the outside looking in, Aussie Rules Footy sounds like a completely made-up sport, and this key insight is what drives Pro Jank Footy: it is a game that reimagines the rules of Aussie Rules Footy.
The fundamental principle is that whenever a player scores a goal in Pro Jank Footy, the opposition chooses a game-changing power-up. There are powers that can make their own team better, such as making themselves faster or adding a high-powered superstar player to their team. There are also powers that can make your opponent’s team worse by causing opposing players to slip when they run or by turning the entire team into tiny players. There are even powers that change the rules of the game by adding goalposts all around the boundary line, introducing a third team to the game, or even transforming all the players into footballs, seagulls, or both!
As each goal is scored, more powers affect the gameplay and stack as the match progresses, creating a unique gameplay experience where Pro Jank Footy starts as a traditional sports game and descends into beautiful janky chaos that both celebrates and satirizes Australian sports culture. With over 150 powers to choose from, no two matches are ever the same in Pro Jank Footy.
A throwback to the golden age of arcade sports games, Pro Jank Footy is designed as a couch cooperative experience, so sit down with your buddies and choose from 10 fictional Australian-centric teams (such as the South Coast “Prawns” and the New Team Coming “Sooners”) and kick the footy in 4 different stadiums, which include the typical suburban oval, and the shopping centre carpark (Americans: the mall parking lot).
Pro Jank Footy also includes online support, so you can destroy your Aussie friends downunder at their own game. Plus, there’s a single-player Season Mode, where players choose a random 3 power build and defeat the entire league one by one, becoming the jankiest Aussie footy club in existence.
Collaborating with creative director David Ashby (Co-creator of Italian Spiderman, Danger 5, and the highly anticipated Netflix animated Series Dad’s House), producer Cam Rogers, and co-creator/lead developer Tyler Roach, Pro Jank Footy is a love letter to high-energy sports games of yesteryear and Aussie Rules Footy and culture. Australian comedy legend Broden Kelly (Aunty Donna) serves as the voice of the game, with play-by-play commentary on all the madness. The project was developed with the assistance from Screen Australia and the South Australian Film Corporation.
Pro Jank Footy has already amassed a cult following around the world, having been officially selected at Playtopia (Cape Town, South Africa), Day of the Devs (San Francisco, CA) and BitSummit (Kyoto, Japan). Back at home, Pro Jank Footy free-to-play arcade cabinets have been installed in pubs across Melbourne, Victoria.
