Our main goal with Bushiden‘s combat has always been to have the player surrounded by enemies while still feeling powerful and having the necessary tools to handle those types of combat scenarios. We were finding it challenging to truly create the type of combat scenarios we envisioned inside of our level/room layouts though. Finally, at the very end of July, a light bulb kind of went off and we realized we should take inspiration from the beat ’em up genre.
We first decided to have moments where the screen would lock and we would be able to spawn wave after wave of enemies for the player to battle. It felt right and we continued allowing beat ’em ups to influence our combat direction. We expanded Reylee’s combo to a four-hit combo and it felt much more satisfying!
Next, we decided to implement the ability to grab enemies and then either throw them behind you (damaging any other enemy that the thrown enemy hits) or flip kick the enemy with the option to toss a shuriken behind you.
We’re very happy with these tweaks and additions and hope all of you are as excited as we are about them!
A few other things we’d like to point out… more sound efx! Not all are in place yet, but sound design continues and is coming along nicely we think! Additionally, you may notice that shurikens are now consumables… we’ll discuss that more in the future. Lastly, this footage contains new music from Michael. We love it and hope you do as well!
