Shenmue creator Yu Suzuki has told Famitsu in a recent interview that he wants to make Shenmue 3.
Speaking at an event unveiling a new mobile game in the series, Shenmue City, Suzuki discussed his desire to create a third game.
“I want to make 3 with the same volume as in the past. There have actually been a lot of requests from fans for 3 as well. There were even petitions signed by by tens of thousands of people. I wanted to carry out my obligations for the series.”
The only issue with developing Shenmue 3 would be that they might blow money on development for the game not to sell. Sega‘s said in the past that if a first-party were to endorse them, they’d trade for exclusivity.
