New Details On SOE’s DC Universe from Latest EDGE
In this issue of EDGE, executive creative director Jim Lee describes DC Universe as a “kick-ass hybrid between a traditional MMO and a first-person action console game”.
You’ll get to create your own superhero or villain, depending on if you want to be the good guy or not. You’ll get to pick your abilities, such as fire and ice and moving around with the power of flight, or possibly speed-running and teleportation.
Your hero/villain levels up as you play in the online world. As you level, you’ll develop your abilties more. Example: when you start the game you’ll be able to fly, but not until you develop your abilities will you be able to pull of insane attacks in mid-air.
You don’t really get to play as and of the famous DC characters, but you’ll be able to interact with them. You could end up saving Superman from being stabbed in the face with Kryptonite.
Two large shared environments were revealed so far, one beng Metropolis (Superman) and the other being Gotham City (Batman). DC Universe will be comprised of a mix of all these environments and separate instances.
Player-vs-Player arenas will be present and fights take very crafty turns. One player could freeze another in a block of ice, then pick up the block of ice he is frozen in and chuck it at another player.
It is possible in the future to see models, environments and costumes from the game ending up in some of DC Comics’ other properties. They have plans for crossovers. “We can tie-in future DC tentpole events and translate the stories for the gaming world, and have them occur simultaneously,” said Lee. “The possibilities are numerous and very exciting.”
