PS5 AI upscaler Quick Spectral Super Resolution announced
The base console version of PlayStation 5 Pro's PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution.
PlayStation 5 will introduce Quick Spectral Super Resolution—the base console equivalent of PlayStation 5 Pro’s artificial intelligence upscaling solution PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution—Sony Interactive Entertainment announced.
“[PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution] analyzes game images pixel by pixel and uses [artificial intelligence] to upscale them with more detail and stability than conventional approaches; until now, its computational demands made bringing that experience to [base PlayStation 5] impossible,” said Sony Interactive Entertainment graphics research and development principal engineer Daniel Craig.
Quick Spectral Super Resolution is a new performance tier of artificial intelligence upscaling, and an offshoot of PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution. It is built on a streamlined neural network architecture, with hand-tuned implementation that maximizes performance on base PlayStation 5 consoles.
“While [PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution] remains the gold standard on [PlayStation 5] Pro, [Quick Spectral Super Resolution] provides some notable improvements to both image detail and image stability on [PlayStation 5],” Craig said.
Patches for both Marvel’s Wolverine and Ghost of Yotei will be available today that implement this new upscaling solution. Quick Spectral Super Resolution will also be available to implement by all PlayStation developers going forward.
Here is a look at Marvel’s Wolverine and Ghost of Yotei‘s implementations of Quick Spectral Super Resolution:
Marvel’s Wolverine
“Our team at Insomniac works hard to make sure each of our games is a showcase of PlayStation hardware, and we’re excited for Marvel’s Wolverine to be one of the first titles to bring this new QSSR technology to players,” said Insomniac Games head of technology Mike Fitzgerald.
“[Quick Spectral Super Resolution] adds more pixel-level clarity and stability to our environments, bringing out extra detail amidst the busy streets of Madripoor, the dense alleyways of Shinjuku, and many other areas across Logan’s epic journey. It’s a perfect companion to the launch of Marvel’s Wolverine, and it brings a great taste of the [PlayStation 5] Pro experience to our players on [PlayStation 5].
“Personally, I love seeing how the PlayStation tech teams continually improve the [PlayStation 5] platform, and I’m excited for more games to make use of [Quick Spectral Super Resolution] in the future!”
Ghost of Yotei
“At Sucker Punch, we’re excited to bring [Quick Spectral Super Resolution] to Ghost of Yotei players so that they can experience the world we’ve created with even more clarity and detail,” said Sucker Punch Productions lead rendering engineer Jasmin Patry.
“[Quick Spectral Super Resolution] excels at resolving the fine details in our characters and environments and does so with a level of temporal stability that hasn’t been possible on the [PlayStation 5] console until now.
“We’ve long wished that all [PlayStation 5] players could experience the incredible image quality that [PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution] brings to [PlayStation 5] Pro, and [Quick Spectral Super Resolution] is a positive step towards that goal!”
