GOBBLE is a new 2D side-scrolling action game born from Nippon Ichi Software’s internal “Project Pitch Fest,” the event that produced titles such as Yomawari and The Liar Princess and the Blind Prince. Its cartoon-style graphics and lively animations bring the screen to life, creating a pop yet dark world that’s fun to watch as well as play.
■ Story
A long time ago, this world was overflowing with terrifying creatures, called “Monsters.” These monsters were led by an evil “Demon King,” who terrorized the lives of people. In this hopeless situation, one young man stood up against the Demon King. He proved victorious in battle, and once the Demon King was slain, all monsters simultaneously disappeared. The brave young man become known as the “Hero.”
Rute grew up listening to this story. But appearing in front of him now are those very monsters that were thought to be extinct. Having no skill to fight these monsters, Rute found himself in a pinch. Just then, an arrogant and selfish bird monster appeared.
“Use me.”
Guided by this hungry monster, the peace that filled everyday life begins to crumble.
“I am hungry!!”
■ Characters
Rute The boy who aspires to be a hero.
Rute is a brave, but reckless boy who lives with his family in a small village. When the monsters appeared, he ignored his family’s pleas to stop and ran towards the chaos, where he found himself in a dangerous situation.
This is where he meets “Kamael,” the suspicious-looking monster. He unwillingly listens to Kamael, and sets off on a journey to find his family.
Kamael The self-proclaimed strongest monster.
A monster that looks like a bird, that speaks human words. It looks down on humans and uses Rute as its “servant” in order to satisfy its hunger.
A strange monster who preys upon other monsters, and it is able to use the powers of whatever it consumes. It does not have much interests outside of feeding, and constantly clashes with Rute.
■ Cartoon-Style Graphics
The cartoonish design of this game is one of its main selling points.
The exaggerated and vibrant art style has characters with lots of facial expressions, which help the liveliness of the graphics.
—It’s fun to simply watch the characters express themselves.
■ Onomatopoeia
When entering a stage, you will see onomatopoeia that pops up as effects to such things like Rute’s actions and the sound of wind.
Going hand-in-hand with the cartoon-ish style, whenever actions like running or jumping are performed, the words “DASH” and “HOP” appears, making it seem like you are watching an exciting anime.
—Each of Rute’s actions are accompanied by an onomatopoeia.
—Words like “chilly” and “drafty” help set a cold atmosphere.
■ Comic
Throughout the story are graphic inserts reminiscent of scenes from a comic book. Players can “enjoy by just watching” through these inserts that provide much more than when the scene is just words to read off the screen.
—Impressive comics have dynamic art!
—They can even appear when you are progressing through the stage.
■ “Predation”: The Key to Gameplay
The stages that Rute progresses through are filled with monsters! Using Kamael’s powers, you need to face the monsters and fight back. Defeated monsters can be consumed.
When consuming enemies, the number of predation hearts—which takes place of HP—increase. Additionally, depending on the monster consumed, you will be able to steal their power and use it in advantageous ways to clear the stage!
—A corpse appears after defeating an enemy…which means it’s time for predation!
—When consuming, the word “GOBBLE” appears in large letters!
In order to satisfy Kamael’s hunger, you need to consume as many monsters as possible!
