Dragon Quest VII Reimagined – Emberdale and Wetlock hands-on gameplay, screenshots

Square Enix has released 15 minutes of new Dragon Quest VII Reimagined footage and screenshots as part of first hands-on media previews that went live today.

The footage showcases two areas of the game—Emberdale from earlier on in the story, and Wetlock from a bit further in.

The Emberdale footage follows the heroes as they arrive just in time for the Flaming Festival. Although the town clairvoyant has predicted that the volcano central to the celebration will erupt that same day, the festivities push forward with the help of the heroes, who investigate the cause behind the clairvoyant’s prediction.

The Wetlock footage opens with an elderly bard arriving in town, playing an enchanting melody that lures the townsfolk into a portal connected to Highendreigh Tower, intending to protect them from a foretold flood. And so the heroes set out to uncover the source of the disaster.

This segment also highlights the new Moonlighting system, which allows each character to “moonlight” as a second vocation alongside their main class, unlocking the potential for various skill combinations. For example, your hero can be both a Sailor and a Thief, Maribel can be a Priestess and Mage, or Ruff can be both a Martial Artist and Warrior. Unlike the original Dragon Quest VII: Fragments of the Forgotten Path, which required players to visit a specific location to change vocations, you can now switch at any time simply by pressing down on the d-pad.

The footage also features a brief look at the game’s new tab-based menus, a first for the Dragon Quest series. While previous Dragon Quest games have featured the more classic window-based menus, Dragon Quest VII Reimagined adopts a more modern interface for more comfortable navigation.

Dragon Quest VII Reimagined is due out for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series, Switch 2, Switch, and PC via Steam and Microsoft Store on February 5, 2026 worldwide. Read more about the game here here, and here.
