Mashiro Witch: Midnight Marchen

Square Enix has announced Mashiro Witch: Midnight Marchen, a new “dark fantasy RPG” from its Business Division 10 studio, for iOS and Android. It will launch as a free-to-play title with in-app purchases in 2017 in Japan.

Here’s an overview of the game’s story:

The world, on the verge of destruction, is ruled by witches known as the “Six Princesses,” who make up the “Princess Banquet.” In order to save the world from demise, magical girls throw themselves into battle. The Six Princesses are afraid and try to use rare beings known as “Pure Whites” (Farbros) in order to relieve the magical girls of their bloody everyday lives.

Witches are humans and creatures that have turned negative emotions such as jealousy and hatred into magical power and awakened to the power to use magic. “Negative emotions” are the root of the world’s magical power. By using these negative emotions as magic, they become even stronger negative emotions.

The main character is a girl named Mana Asahina. She has lost memory of her mother and enters the academy in which the game is set in search of clues leading to information about her mother. Players will be able to choose from one of several voices for Mana, including:

  • Strong – Sumire Uesaka
  • Cheerful – Rena Ueda
  • Shy – Ai Kakuma
  • Clunky – Rie Takahashi
  • Lively – Nao Toyama
  • Serious – Saori Hayami
  • Firm – MAO

Players will be able to battle cooperatively alongside each other. There is a “Union Magic” element that allows players to combine their magical power, as well.
