Playable for the first time this week at ChinaJoy 2018.

Monkey King: Hero Is Back

Monkey King: Hero Is Back will launch in China in early 2019, with other regions to follow at a later date, publisher Oasis Games announced. When contacted by Gematsu, the company was not able to confirm whether the game will release in the west in 2019.

Jointly produced by Sony Interactive Entertainment, Oasis Games, and intellectual property holder October Media, and developed by HexaDrive, the upcoming action game centers on the animated Chinese character Monkey King, has a 10-plus hours storyline, and “aims to bring the authentic Chinese spirit from the film to a global audience via a high-quality gameplay experience.”

The game is based on the 2015 animated movie of the same name, which was the highest-grossing animated film in China at the time of release with a box office of $153 million. It depicts the journey shared by three main characters—Monkey King, Pigsy, and the child Liu Jiang—who fight many different monsters using various skills and magic, as well as cooperation and wisdom. The relationships between these characters strengthen as their journey continues, and they find the missing pieces to the puzzles of their own individual lives.

At ChinaJoy 2018 in Shanghai this week, attendees can play the a 15-minute gameplay demo of Monkey King: Hero Is Back at the Sony booth. The demo’s mission is to conquer all challenges and reach the save point while protecting Liu Jiang.
