Earth Defense Force 4.1 first print bonus revealed

Early enlistees entitled to look even gaudier than the bugs they'll be shooting up.

Earth Defense Force 4.1: The Shadow of New Despair

D3 Publisher has revealed the first print bonus that will come with initial copies of Earth Defense Force 4.1: The Shadow of New Despair, namely a gold-coated version of the spider-like Depth Crawler vehicle.

The Depth Crawler vehicle itself is a new edition to Earth Defense Force 4.1 in general as a vehicle that specializes in fighting insect menaces underground, though it’s also said to be competent in outdoor combat as well, thanks to its wall crawling abilities. During gameplay, it can be requested by an Air Raider character, though only Air Raiders and Rangers can actually take control of it, with no room available for other people to clamber aboard. Naturally, it can also be used during online coop.

The golden Depth Crawler specifically is stated to only be available in limited quantities; in a facetiously written press release designed to resemble a news release from the game itself, the justification for the production limits are that the golden coating make the vehicle three times more expensive to produce than standard Depth Crawlers. It also claims that the golden Depth Crawler is capable of repelling enemy radar waves with just its paint alone, although it openly admits that “real world results have yet to be proven.”

Earth Defense Force 4.1: The Shadow of New Despair arrives in Japan for PlayStation 4 on April 2. Catch a gallery of screenshots featuring the golden Depth Crawler in action at the gallery here.
