I think that there is a problem with going this route. Your example about cell phones is a good and valid one, but one must look beyond just what they can offer, and take a hard, long look at the competition in the field.

It boils down to this: What are the contenders in video-gaming consoles? Sony, Nintendo, MS, and the PC (and maybe the Ouya).

What are the contenders in multi-channel entertainment systems? More than I can count.

MS is primarily a PC software and video-gaming company, in contrast to Sony, which has been manufacturing pretty much every single consumer electronics since its inception. Taking the battle to Sony’s court (not to mention the huge number of potential competitors, including every single tablet and smartphone manufacturer) is not a battle MS can win.

The X360 sold because it was about games first. When a console becomes NOT about games first, prospective buyers will have to look at the reason they intend to buy it, and compare it to the various other machines they can spend their money on instead, which may offer equal or better service in their not-games functionality. I think that, by shifting the focus away from games, MS is setting itself up to fail.

With the exception of Nintendo.
The Wii U can’t play anything besides games.

Oh, I know it’ll have games. I just don’t like the new focus. It should be a gaming platform first, then media. Not the other way around.

I’m sure they have games, because they has been invested to build for many new game studio.

Consoles will never be based on just games anymore. If they do than they would be losing a competitive edge against the competition. They are changing just how cell phones changed from just being about calling someone and receiving calls.
