That is somewhat strange, but all the same I do see how that can be (a buddy of mine was pretty apathetic to the demo also). You also bring up a pretty interesting point; "I wonder how the similarities to MH are seen by the people on the streets." I hadn't really thought about that, but this could have something to do with it sales-wise. There was another MH clone called Earth Seeker for the Wii and it's another game that is really fun albeit not perfect/rated perfect, but its sales were literally garbage and I could never for the life of me figure out why.

I actually read a comment on here the other day that said, "my conspiracy is that the Japanese view our games as fascinating pop-culture journeys as much we view theirs." Maybe that's true, and when competing shooters, with CoD2 being authoritatively western and E.X. distinctly Japanese, gamers were more intrigued by the other?

Definitely a unique game, this E.X. Troopers. Suspiciously affordable for an import also--- hmmm.

Thanks for asking :) Maybe I've missed the point a little using the term "repetitive", what I actually meant was "not particularly original", which is something that ties directly to Monster Hunter: I have played that game(s) for quite some time on the PSP, and I think that as a franchise, it has almost said all it had to say.

E.X. Troopers is evidently a carefully put together product, but I think it could have built something a little more "risqué" on the MH basis, that's all. The game has enjoyed a warm reception from the japanese press, but there's an evidence of slow sales so... I wonder how the similarities to MH are seen by the people on the streets.

I'd really like to ask some japanese gamers why didn't they find E.X. Troopers as attractive as Call of Duty: maybe they had a similar impression to mine, something like "it's okay but, doesn't look unmissable"? Is it a matter of emulation, like "everybody plays CoD, so we're going to do the same" (which is a very japanese attitude)?

Something didn't click with the core audience E.X. Troopers was aimed to, just like it happened to me - even though I'm certainly not in the core audience, being an european adult. But I've always been in love with japanese stuff: I watch anime and read manga on a regular basis. The reason why E.X.T failed to impress me is kind of puzzling.

Which is sorta my point. If a game like E.X. Troopers struggles, what hope does a new IP with virtually no backing stand to accomplish?

I felt like this spin-off was crafted to be more appealing to the Japanese gamers, far more than previous Lost Planet titles.

CoD beat no odds. The thought that western games don't sell in Japan is pretty false. This isn't suprising at all.

E.X. troopers sales however...
-_-;
I am hyped about the new BlOps, but I wouldn't put it past Ex troopers. I really do feel the "western games are better" fallacy has infected the Japanese mindset full force, as I was fearing when so many major devs started spewing all that crap a few years back.

I'm actually surprised by your response; I really loved the PS3 demo, and I thought the single-player portion was really well varied and cool. In particular, I thought the music brought so much style to the game and really had a blast.

The online I enjoyed also because I, well, kind of sucked at it :P. It was great having another player involved and taking down the tougher bosses, and I really felt that MH vibe when I took down one of the bosses (there were two of them in one area; forget their names).

What about it did you find repetitive? I agree with you that it is simplistic, but I actually liked that aspect.

Bravely Default is a handheld S-E game, man; they're the best things around. It sells because it's square and can be trusted right from the get-go (handheld wise, I say).
**It's formula isn't very different from classic FF though. It's a new project, but it isn't very "new" gameplay wise.

As for E.X--- I dunno. I really loved the demo and had a blast online, so I just can't comprehend it. It'd be a day one for me.

The EX Troopers situation should be looked at from another perspective: it's not "why didn't it sell in Japan", but "what's wrong with the game". It's a quality issue, in my opinion. Most people tend to think that the penetration of western games in the japanese market has only pushed the local developers to emulate them in order to achieve success abroad. But to a certain degree, this phenomenon has given to the audience a different outlook on the quality factor. And if EX Troopers, in its complete versions, has proven to be the cute but simplistic and repetitive game I've seen from the PS3 demo, then I'd be inclined to believe it suffered from bad word of mouth among the same japanese. Maybe nowadays, a good anime characterisation is not enough to sell well in the land of the Rising Sun.

I'm still surprised COD sells in Japan, although their tastes in games shifted somewhat these past few years. Might be the surge of FPS games in the market now that's why.

E.X. Troopers not doing so good, I can't even imagine how the PS Vita version would sell lol...

Anyway, I noticed a slight bump on the PS3's sales. Christmas coming that's why?

EX-troopers isn't really a new IP its just a spin off of Lost planet I'm pretty sure the change in looks and setting could have turned off alot of players.

Pretty sure it has nothing to di with them hating capcom lol. Also SFxT is kinda a poor example for the fact the vita alone is doing bad and most Japanese gamers don't really consider capcom fighters as good fighting games. MH:TG could be explained for its low sales in wait for 4 so yeah has nothing to do with hate.

My only assumption would be for the general audience to have taken some kind of hatred towards Capcom much like the west has done. Notice how SFxT Vita sold absolutely abysmally as well as the ''best price'' Monster Hunter Tri G.

Your statement of them not supporting new IPs is not entirely true, however, look at Bravely Default, unless it's some kind of final fantasy spinoff I'm not aware of.
