@Sal Romano:

I must admit, I’m surprised by these numbers.

One could say the problem with video games in Japan are shown in the above numbers.

The consumer is just not buying them. Those numbers are not very good when compared to the lifetime sales of games in the west.

Of course, games are more expensive in Japan… even then, I doubt it compares well with the western figures.

Then again, this doesn’t include portable games.

Looking at this list, it’s no surprise why we see so many games from Japan going to the portables.

To be fair, I’m sure the numbers for the portable games in Japan crush the numbers for any portable games in the west.

Example – Monster Hunter.

@Sal Romano:

Thanks for the list.

Are those all just first week sales? I’d be interested to see how the total sales match up.

Even though it was a port, you would think Vesperia for PS3 would have sold more than Hot Shots Golf 5.

(Calling the PS3 Vesperia just a port is almost a crime, but I was trying to keep things simple, haha.)

@Zero: Agreed. Three months in and Namco Bandai’s already topped their highest day one of 2011 – Tales of Xillia at 525,605.

And apparently, One Piece is now the four best-selling PS3 game to release in Japan, pushing Xillia down to fifth.

Here’s the new top 20, if anyone cares:

1) Final Fantasy XIII – 1,905,979
2) Final Fantasy XIII-2 – 797,986
3) Metal Gear Solid 4 – 706,461
4) One Piece: Kaizoku Musou – 655,774
5) Tales of Xillia – 632,151
6) Gran Turismo 5 – 600,860
7) Yakuza 4 – 557,771
8) Fist of the North Star: Ken’s Rage – 553,229
9) Resident Evil 5 – 520,564
10) Yakuza 3 – 509,306
11) Dynasty Warriors 7 – 474,238
12) Mobile Suit Gundam: Extreme VS – 465,976
13) Pro Evolution Soccer 2011 – 450,184
14) Pro Evolution Soccer 2010 – 438,552
15) Yakuza: Dead Souls – 413,172
16) Hot Shots Golf 5 – 410,052
17) Sengoku Basara 3 – 408,379
18) Pro Evolution Soccer 2012 – 405,757
19) Pro Evolution Soccer 2009 – 405,653
20) Monster Hunter Portable 3rd HD Ver. – 404,501

And the one knocked down because of One Piece:

21) Tales of Vesperia – 390,523

Oh, Namco. You’ve recently brought me so much joy, yet so the past sheds so many tears.

Ok, I’m not really crying.

Stop looking at me! *sob*

@FearMonkey:
Namco Bandai usually publishes their anime games in NA/EU. It’s the tales games they seem to forget about :P

@FearMonkey: If those Pirate Warriors trademarks are anything to go by, we’re getting it.

Rumour has it SE has been somewhat stingy with the copies they’ve sent retailers, so that would perhaps explain why the game doesn’t have that many copies sold and yet charts high in the list. I’m guessing lots of people are still waiting for their copies or word of mouth is spreading and the game is going to linger on that chart for a little while longer.

Huge drop for Tales, but it’s expected since it happens with mostly every single Tales of game. Harvest moon sat confortably on the second spot, and that’s also no surprise for me. I’m curious to see whether it will reclaim the first spot again or not. Depends on whether any important high profile game releases next week; Isn’t that Pokemon x Nobunaga game being released soonish? I predict that one will join MH TriG, SM3D and MK7 as a game that will linger on this chart for months to come :P
