It's an interesting concept, though as incredibilistic says, the 3D TV's are very expensive (even more so in the UK), and not very many people can afford them at present. As for me I actually use a computer Monitor with added component 'TV Box' for gaming, that way I can use the TV and PC through the same set, saving room. I doubt that this would work with any converted 3D signal unfortunately.

However I do like the idea, providing it works well.

Since you'll need a TV that can display images at 240hz this really won't matter to, well, anyone until the 3D TV's debut. And if Sony expects this feature to take off the 3D sets will have to be equal in price to current models. If they launch 3D TV's at $3,000 it'll be a couple years before anyone even cares about the 3D firmware update.

And Sony's not the only one. If LG, Samsung, Vizio and a few other manufacturers release 3D sets that are expensive it'll take years for the fad to catch on as no one will be able to afford the new technology and may not even want to spend the extra cash to do it.

If Sony could find a way to make current HDTV's display 3D then it'll be a great selling point when matching the PS3 and the 360 side-by-side (that is of course unless Microsoft finds a way to do the same thing through a firmware upgrade.
